A large mononuclear cell found in connective tissue of the heart wall in inflammatory conditions, especially in the Aschoff body. The ovoid nucleus contains a central chromatin mass appearing as a wavy bar in longitudinal section.

Synonym: Anitschkow cell, Anitschkow myocyte, caterpillar cell.
