The visibility of floating particles in gases or liquids when illuminated by a ray of sunlight and viewed at right angles to the illuminating ray.

Any of various thorny shrubs or low trees of the genus Crataegus, of the rose family, with white or pink blossom (may) and usu. red berries (haws); esp. (a) (more fully common hawthorn) the Eurasian C. monogyna, much used for hedging; (b) (more fully midland hawthorn) the European C. laevigata, found in woodlands. Also, any of several related shrubs.
