[French plinthe or Latin plinthus from Greek plinthos tile, brick, stone squared for building.]
a. Architecture. The lower square slab or block at the base of a column or pedestal. L16.
b. A block of stone etc. serving as a base or pedestal to a statue, vase, etc.; a supporting foundation or base, esp. the squared base of a piece of furniture, item of equipment, etc. E18.
