A republic in eastern africa, south of sudan and east of kenya. Its capital is kampala. In 1894 it was formally proclaimed a british protectorate but became independent in 1966. Its name is swahili, u, land + ganda, the name of its indigenous people, the land of the ganda. The origin of their name is unknown.
