<chemical> 4-aminobenzoic acid ethyl ester. A surface anaesthetic that acts by preventing transmission of impulses along nerve fibres and at nerve endings. It is comparatively non-irritating and has low systemic toxicity.

Pharmacological action: anaesthetics, local.
