A pungent aromatic yellow powder used to flavour and colour curry powder and as the source of a yellow dye; the rhizome of a tropical Asian plant, Curcuma longa, of the ginger family, from which this is prepared. Also, the plant from which this is obtained.
Comb.: turmeric paper unsized paper tinged with a solution of turmeric, used as a test for alkalis.
