Anglo-Japanese Alliance (sh)

(1902-23) Alliance between Britain and Japan to protect their respective interests in China and Korea.

Directed against Russian expansionism, the alliance helped Japan in the Russo-Japanese War by discouraging France from entering the war on the Russian side. The alliance later prompted Japan to enter World War I on the side of the Allies. Britain allowed the alliance to lapse after the war, when it no longer feared Russian encroachment in China.
