The action or act of compressing; the state or condition of being compressed. LME.
a. In a steam engine, the reduction in volume of the steam left in the cylinder after the exhaust is closed at the end of the exhaust stroke. M19.
b. The (amount of) reduction in volume of the air-fuel mixture in an internal-combustion engine before ignition. L19.
Computing. The process of reducing the amount of space occupied by data that is being stored or transmitted, by minimizing redundant information. M20.
Comb.: compression ratio the ratio of the maximum to minimum volume in the cylinder of an internal-combustion engine measured before and after compression; compression stroke the stroke of the piston compressing the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder of an internal-combustion engine.
